Zelensky declares state of emergency in Ukraine's energy sector (2026)

The biting cold of winter has descended upon Ukraine, and with it, a dire state of emergency in the energy sector. Thousands are left in the dark and without warmth as relentless attacks on critical infrastructure continue. This is the reality President Zelenskyy is facing, and he's taking decisive action.

Ukraine has officially declared a state of emergency, with Kyiv bearing the brunt of the crisis. Overnight temperatures in the capital have plummeted to a bone-chilling -20°C, making the situation all the more critical.

Following an emergency cabinet meeting, President Zelenskyy announced the formation of a round-the-clock task force. Their mission? To tackle the devastating consequences of Russian airstrikes and the worsening weather. He didn't mince words, accusing Moscow of deliberately weaponizing the frigid temperatures to cripple energy distribution facilities.

But here's where it gets controversial... In recent weeks, Kyiv has been hit particularly hard. Imagine 70% of the city plunged into darkness for hours after a single night of intense attacks. The impact on homes without power, heating, or running water is devastating.

Zelenskyy's new measures include a crucial step: securing essential energy equipment and resources from abroad to replace damaged installations. The First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy of Ukraine will be at the helm, overseeing the support for affected communities. He's also ordered an increase in emergency help points throughout Kyiv, offering residents access to heat and power. This could even lead to a relaxation of the current midnight curfew.

And this is the part most people miss... The attacks aren't limited to the capital. Last week, Ukrainian officials reported that over one million people in southeastern Ukraine endured hours without heating and water due to Russian air strikes.

DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy provider, is in a constant state of crisis. Its CEO, Maxim Timchenko, revealed the relentless nature of the attacks. As the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion nears, Timchenko highlighted the constant barrage of "waves of drones, cruise and ballistic missiles" targeting their energy grid. The frequency of these strikes has made recovery nearly impossible. DTEK currently serves 5.6 million Ukrainians.
