An English language school in Dublin has been forced to compensate former teacher Paola Caro Almohalla for nearly €35,000 after she was dismissed during the same period when other staff were hired at lower pay. Academic Bridge, the school operating in Gardiner Place and Harcourt Street, accused the company of employing a 'sham' redundancy process that undermined fair employment terms. The Workplace Relations Commission ruled that the redundancies were unlawful, citing that the school had implemented changes before the consultation process concluded, despite a request from the Unite trade union to delay them. Almohalla, who worked since August 2022 on a weekly salary of €694, claimed the contract was altered without transparency, leading to her dismissal. The school maintained that the decision was necessary to maintain financial solvency, while the WRC pointed out the inconsistency between the school's actions and its stated efforts to negotiate. O’Neill highlighted the failure to provide an objective selection process and noted that the recruitment of other teachers at lower pay rates meant the redundancy did not meet statutory requirements. This case underscores the challenges of balancing economic pressures with fair labor practices, raising questions about how schools handle such disputes.
