The patch utilizes synthetic DNA-based sensors called aptamers, which bind to target molecules in the body. These sensors are embedded in microneedles on the patient's arm, sampling fluid from beneath the skin. Patients find this process nearly painless, making it a more comfortable alternative to standard blood draws.
The aptamer technology is versatile and can be adapted to test for various drugs and illnesses. Nutromics is exploring other diagnostic and monitoring patches, including one for sepsis, a leading cause of preventable death. Sepsis symptoms often mimic other infections, making diagnosis challenging. Measuring sepsis markers in the body could enable swift and effective treatment with antibiotics, potentially saving countless lives.
The collaboration between academia and industry is pivotal in translating research into practical solutions. Nutromics CEO Peter Vranes emphasizes the importance of partnerships, highlighting that research institutions excel at discovery but may not always possess the skills to translate those discoveries into products. This partnership has resulted in a readily manufacturable device, bringing the lab-based research closer to real-world impact.
Trials of the patch are underway in Australian ICUs, and Nutromics aims for US regulatory approval by next year.
