London's Rush Hour Chaos: Southern and Thameslink Trains Suspended, Tube Delays Persist
London commuters are facing a chaotic rush hour as a signalling system fault between Norwood Junction and London Bridge/Blackfriars has caused major disruptions. The key lines used by Southern and Thameslink trains between south London and the city centre are currently blocked, with National Rail issuing a "do not travel" alert for affected lines. The disruption is expected to last until 1 pm.
The issues extend beyond the trains. The Piccadilly and Central lines are experiencing severe delays, with the Piccadilly line suspended between Acton Town and Heathrow Terminals due to a signal failure at Osterley. Passengers are advised to delay their journeys if possible, and those who must travel are urged to allow an extra 60-90 minutes for their journey and check service updates.
The problems began with a train derailment at Selhurst depot in south-east London and a signalling fault between London Blackfriars and Norwood Junction. These incidents have reduced the number of operational lines and forced trains to run slower than usual, leading to widespread delays. The situation is further complicated by a signal failure at North Acton, affecting the Central line.
Despite the chaos, the Gatwick Express is providing a reliable service as an alternative for passengers traveling to central London. However, a large number of Southern and Thameslink trains to London Bridge have been canceled, causing significant disruption for those trying to reach the city.
Signal faults, such as the one causing these disruptions, occur when track circuits malfunction, falsely indicating that a train is occupying the line. This forces drivers to halt at red signals and obtain spoken authority to continue at reduced speed, often leading to major delays. Network Rail is investigating the issue, which may stem from electronic faults or objects interfering with the track.
