Flights resume at Dane County Regional Airport after weekend disruptions
MADISON (WKOW) - Monday marked a return to normalcy for most flights at Dane County Regional Airport, but the weekend had been a challenging journey for travelers. Over the course of two days, 32 flights were canceled, and numerous others experienced delays, causing significant inconvenience for passengers.
One traveler, Zachary Jordan, faced a particularly frustrating situation. His plans to spend quality time with his son were disrupted by the sudden cancellation of multiple flights from North and South Carolina. Jordan expressed his disappointment, stating, 'To lose three days in a matter of a couple of hours is just terrible.'
The confusion surrounding the cancellations added to the passengers' frustration. Jordan questioned the logic of canceling flights in 40-degree weather, suggesting that the decision seemed illogical. Michael Reichers, the airport's spokesperson, acknowledged the widespread frustration among travelers. He explained that many passengers express their confusion, especially when their flights are canceled despite favorable weather conditions at their destination.
Reichers attributed the cancellations to the impact of snow and ice on southern airports that are not equipped to handle such weather. He emphasized that these airports face safety concerns when encountering snow and ice, which can lead to a buildup of delays. In contrast, La Crosse Regional Airport reported minimal delays and no cancellations over the weekend, with all flights arriving on time on Monday.
Looking ahead, Reichers assured passengers that the airport does not anticipate any major delays or cancellations on Monday. He encouraged travelers to remain patient as the airlines work to recover from the weekend disruptions. Despite the challenges, the airport is taking steps to ensure a smoother travel experience for its passengers.
